My Story
Sculpture

My love of sculpture was born at a night class where the inspirational teacher taught me much about technique and proportions. I then became hooked on all the tactile delights of using clay, plaster, cement and stone and the challenge of turning a 2 dimensional idea into a 3D form. I try to catch the essence of the object in simple planes, reflecting light, whilst being seen from all angles.

Painting

I studied the techniques of old masters, especially Rembrandt. From them I learned to use the indirect method of painting. This involves layering of transparent oil paint to add depth, especially to shadows, and adding thicker opaque paint on the surface, particularly on the highlights, to bring the painting to life. When painting outdoors I use the direct method of capturing the scene in a single layer of brushstrokes, so
as not to muddy the colours. This brings spontaneity and freshness to the painting.

Photography

Photography is of course, all about light and composition. It is about capturing the moment of the scene that excites you. I seek patterns in landscapes and architecture.
